Cheesy Cover, Classic Music

Okay, I’m going to get this off my chest right away. I don’t understand the cover on this CD. Go ahead, take a look, it’s right up there. It’s not that I’m prudish, I don’t even think the photo is erotic, but there’s just too many ways to interrupt the “message.” To me, it’s borrowed interest, clichéd, with too little connection to the “product” it’s selling.

I suppose it’s meant to convey enigma and suggest metaphors (Is the guitar her shield against the world?) that continue the theme of Unconditional – the title and title cut of Ana Popovic’s new CD. that was released August 16. She expounds on that theme on the liner notes.

“Unconditional is how I stand toward my music,” Popovic writes. “It’s mine, it’s sacred, and it’s with no boundaries. Absolute. Definite.” And later, “This is how I see the blues: Blues is unconditional, maybe the most conservative style of all. If you alter it too much, it will no longer be blues.”

“Unconditional”

Those notes fold out to a tasty, full-color, nine-by-twelve inch poster of a guitar-slinging Popovic (thankfully clothed) and a few of the lyrics to the title song hand written over a profile of her face.

But my opinion of the cover matters about as much as the cover itself, because the music itself is excellent, at times outstanding, and positions Popovic right there with the best young blues performers working today, man or woman. She also writes most of her material – and it is real songwriting too, not just two lines and a refrain. On Unconditional, Popovic’s sixth album, and third for Delta Groove subsidiary Eclecto Groove, she writes or co-writes eight of the twelve tunes.

It’s hard to believe that Popovic has been on the American blues scene for more than a decade. Born in Belgrade, Yugoslavia, now Serbia, she just turned thirty-five, so there should be lots more to come. It’s been said by others that Popovic is hard to classify, and it’s true that she delivers several styles on this set.

But she fits pretty nicely into what I’d call “rockin’ boogie blues.” It’s the kind of music you go out to hear with your friends on a Friday night at your favorite club.

The confusion may be because she is equally adept at so many ways of presenting her songs, just as comfortable playing laid-back, Delta-like, acoustic slide or screaming electric riffs that might come from Jimmy Vaughan or Larry McCray. Her voice, too, exhibits a wide range of delivery, from soft and sweet to powerful and growling.

The first three cuts of Unconditional display that diversity well. The opener, “Fearless Blues,” is about as down-home blues as you can get, with Popovic on acoustic slide announcing to the world that she’s ready to face whatever it brings: I don’t fear darkest night/I was born, born to fight/I am fearless, fearless, fearless, yeah yeah/inside out.

“Fearless”

This tune and all but two on the CD are supported superbly by guest Jon Cleary on piano and/or B3 organ. In fact, without him along for the ride, many of these songs would have a big hole to fill.

Popovic changes directions fast with “Count Me In,” a foot-stomping, hand-clapping rocker that’s more shouted than sung. Here she pulls out the Strat and works through soaring guitar riffs, aided by guest Jason Ricci on harmonica, another young buck on the scene whom people have trouble pigeonholing.

The title cut isn’t really about her being or delivering anything “unconditional,” as you might suspect. It’s about a love that used to be complete, but has now become routine. Popovic is fondly recalling the past here as she sings: Do you remember the time/way back in the day/when you were right for me/and I was enough for you/Back when our love used to be/unconditional. There’s another guitar style here too, as she squeezes and bends notes that backfill her fine vocals.

“Reset Rewind” is one of the most accessible tunes on the CD, with a powerful, church-like organ part that’s reminiscent of “The Weight” by The Band. It’s a nice, easy-rolling ballad about trying to reconnect with a bygone feeling, with a solid hook that’s hard to forget: Lord let me reset cause I/I know I can’t rewind.

Slide guitar master Sonny Landreth, whom Popovic refers to as her idol, sits in for “Slideshow,” a fast, instrumental rocker that lets both players show off slide licks that scream to the heavens.

Popovic recorded this set in New Orleans with Grammy-winning producer John Porter, so her bouncy interpretation of Koko Taylor’s “Voodoo Woman” seems appropriate. She also turns in an excellent, low-down version of the classic “One Room Country Shack” that, like many of these cuts, is expertly accentuated by Cleary’s organ and piano work. Popovic also re-creates the standard “Work Song” (breaking rocks out here on the chain gang) to fit in a superb guitar solo.

Love that has ended or is ending seems to be the most prominent theme on this album and “Business As Usual,” one of two songs co-written by Mark van Meurs, is a deep blues about a relationship that’s drifting apart – “If these walls could talk/they’d have nothing to say/we’re leaving all the love on the table/each night and each day.”

Unconditional is a very good album that’s mostly blues, but it is several kinds of blues – from rocking shuffles like “Soulful Dress” to funky, Albert Collins-like raves, like “Your Love Ain’t Real.” It’s all driven along expertly by Cleary and drummer Doug Belote, who are front and center on almost every cut.

In my opinion, there isn’t a single clunker on this CD. It’s one that I’ll pull out again and again. And the wide variety of styles only serves to show off Popovic’s expressive voice and her expansive guitar prowess. She’s also a dang good songwriter. In short, she’s the perfect gal to help carry water for the next generation of blues stars.

ANA LOOKS SMOKIN’ HOT ON THE COVER OF THIS ALBUM!!!

  2. TED WILLIAMS9 says:

The problem with the cover is that those who don’t like Ana because of her looks are going to say what they have always said about her,”she just another pretty face with no talent”. And they are so wrong. If you have ever seen her in concert then you know she pours her heart and soul into every show. She can and does play guitar very well.
Now maybe in Europe where sex or rather sexy images are not such a big deal as they are in America that cover might not be a big deal.
But if you(Ana)want to be taken seriously by blues fans in the US it would be a better tactic to be fully clothed. Hopefully this is just a minor misstep. I expect her career will continue to move right ahead and in a few years know one will be thinking about that cover, only the music on the CD.
Now where can I get life size poster of the cover?

    • Chip Cobb says:

This is spot on! She is a stunningly fantastic player and yes in concert…she knocks your socks off. But believe it or not there are those who discount her because she is also a stunningly beautiful woman. Indeed if she wants to be taken more seriously don’t do this again. Well worded … “minor misstep” as a huge fan I’d allow for that.

  3. I haven’t been into Ana’s music as it as always seemed to hard edged and guitar driven to me and the vocals have felt sub par. But that is changing as evidenced by this new cd which surprised me. I will get this new cd. She is coming into her own on the vocals which is a joy to hear. If songs don’t have good vocals.. well I’m just not interested. Congrats to Ana and her crew as I feel this is her best work to date. She’s already over the top as far as her career progress but this one will most likely put her in the clouds.

  4. rick booth says:

What kind of red blooded Man doesn’t like the cover of this CD? Are you serious? Ana is beautiful and the cover is classy. Ana is classy and would have it no other way. The CD cover has garnished so much talk and been so well receievd. If it has allowed more people to give it a spin, then Fantastic! The CD is great and the cover is Beautiful! I love it! You go girl!

  5. Allen S. says:

Have to agree with your review of the CD’s music. It is good music. About the cover, I guess it has that double appeal of two very graceful forms = Strat Sexy.

  6. Fred Waters says:

I wish I was that guitar!!!

  7. Ana says:

Cheesy, I think Dan meant ‘Classy’ it must have been a typo… :-) just the fact it took him so many words to describe the impact the cover had on him, simply proofs that it’s a GREAT cover. Empowering, brave, bold and inspiring- just like the BLUES. Beauty of the basics and an instrument. C’mon c’mon, let’s dig a little deeper… At the end, admit it, your emagination is doing the most of the work, isn’t it??

    —————————
“The making of this record was a journey – of touching the basics again, of limiting myself to a very demanding and precise musical form. Only if you really feel it, know it and want it, you can be blues. Blues is UNCONDITIONAL. Maybe the most CONSERVATIVE style of all. if you play with it, it will no longer be blues. You can only be blues if you respect the rules. And VULNERABLE as it is it STANDS the test of time. This is how I see the blues: the beauty of less, “don’t make it too tidy” kind a thing.. it’s BEAUTY of the BASICS and an instrument.

UNCONDITIONAL is how I stand towards my music -it’s mine, it’s sacred, and it’s with no boundaries. Absolute, definite, I tend to put everything I have into it and don’t let anything or anyone get in-between me and my music. Except the people that truly inspire me.
That place were I am when I’m onstage is simply UNCONDITIONAL. it is MAGICAL. it is just me and my guitar, me and my band, notes, sounds, drum grooves, I let the band lift me up, and I feed of of their energy. I HATE TO THINK when playing. I ONLY FEEL. I am pretty sure everyone can feel that in any job they are doing, that is if you’re doing it with love and passion. And if you’re experienced enough to dare to let yourself go and be yourself. No boundaries, no outside prejudice, just YOU and your TALENT. And ones you find it – you find yourself. And that place takes no pretending, or posing, it’s only there if you’re true, and it’s simply UNCONDITIONAL.” – Ana Popovic talks UNCONDITIONAL.

    • Chip Cobb says:

“I HATE TO THINK when playing. I ONLY FEEL.”

Ana, wonderfully said! I hate to admit that I did sort of agree with the reviewer here. But after reading this I think I understand better and see it in a new light.

Keep singing, playing, and writing what you feel. And you will continue to win over more fans. And if this album art reflects that spirit in your soul than yeah —CLASSY!

Thanks Ana, very much looking forward to seeing you again tomorrow night in Roanoke.

    • Dan Harrell says:

Hi Ana, Sorry, but as I said before, it’s just too much of a cliché for me to get into. Unlike your lyrics and guitar playing, which I think are fresh and interesting. It’s a nice enough photo and you’re a good-looking woman, I just don’t see how it relates to your music, which is what I’m interested in. But if publishing this image is liberating or empowering for you, that’s ok by me – although it was only “brave” or “bold” in the 1950s or earlier. There’s obviously support for you here, so if you are pleasing your fans, who am I to object too much? (I think the prevailing opinions are “flaunt it if you’ve got it” and “you go girl”.) Esp. if it’s you driving the promotions. And if the net-net is that you sell more of this excellent CD, that’s ok by me too. Because, the part that I am interested in is real good. Congratulations again on what is one of the best albums I’ve heard this year. Thanks for writing. I hope to see you out there soon. Best, Dan

      • Ana Popovic says:

Dan, thanks for writing back. I appreciate all the good words you had to say about the music. Glad you’ve got that part down. Let me simplify the idea behind the cover for you some more, cause I have a feeling you still heaven’t got to the bottom if it all..

Blues is a NAKED and RAW musical form, and there is beauty in it, for the ones that see it, know it, and want to become a part of it. And the way it is – it inspires generations. My cover art represents that. This is how I see blues; it’s my take on it- it’s not something we necessary need to negotiate, or criticize, just like we won’t criticize your vision of the blues. Do we all have to see blues as an ( I don’t wanna make thins an age thing but) old man sitting with a guitar? Let me remind you that the blues greats like Elmore James, Robert Johnson, BB KING, Buddy Guy … were young and hip in their time and looking pretty hot too. ( some of them still looking good!!) And do we all have to see blues in the connection with ribs and BBQ? For me ( and I started listening to blues when I was 1 or 2 years old- way before many Americans in this business did) blues was something that had class, style, grace, attitude..Groovy, roots y, passionate music..
…Please don’t tell me you can picture someone who’s sold his soul to the devil and you can’t picture someone becoming one with his instrument.

Yes, you guessed right: there’s more to it than ‘shake what you’ve got’ and ‘sex sells’
If I wanted to shake what I’ve got I would try harder and show a bit more than just a hip.
This photo stands for my take on the blues. It’s my answer to the ULTIMATE question that most you journalists in blues ask about every blues musician in the world: ‘how do you see blues’ What is blues? Question as old as blues it self. Because it’s hard to express what blues is. It’s personal. Nobody can really point out what is that that makes it so mesmerizing.

The cover was (only partially) inspired by January Jones for Versace. Google it please. Wonder if you would think that was cheesy? And wonder who’s gonna tell Red Hot Chilly Peppers they were being cheesy when they’ve got on stage wearing (nothing but) socks…
And last but not least, wonder if you thought that the inside design of Boz Scaggs album featuring NAKED Duane Allman was cheesy as well..

        Let me know your thoughts….
        thanks,
        Ana

P.S. Glad I’ve got fans at Blues Revue, I am a fan of Blues Revue my self, have been reading it ever since I was 13 years old..

  8. Joey Love says:

Of course the cover doesn’t really convey the content of the CD (unless there’s some hidden meaning) but let’s face it, she has a smokin’ hot body so why not flaunt it… everyone else does in the Pop world so why throw stones at a Blues artist that actually is pleasing to look at. A beautiful women playing a guitar just makes me giddy ! You go girl…

  9. Dabloozer says:

I have NO problem with the picture! Ana is a smokin’ hot babe who plays a smokin’ hot guitar! If you got it, FLAUNT IT!

  10. I was lucky to see Ana and Sonny Landreth play together at the Mt Baker Blues Fest up her in Washington last year they played separate and together. Each show is etched in my mind a year later. The cover is the same problem I have when I see Ana live I have to close my eyes so I can enjoy her fine playing she is not only graced with curves Ana is very talented. I will let the reviewer’s do their job and I will set back and enjoy this Fine CD over and over.
Now where can I find the poster of the Cover?

  11. Mark says:

Unconditional is # 7 at this weeks BILLBOARD BLUES CHARTS – Greatest Gainer. Also the album is at # 70 at Amazon’s ALL MUSIC bestsellers list (18 days in the top 100) & number 1 at Amazon’s contemporary Blues bestsellers list.

  12. wayne heet says:

First of all Ana great song. Got to see Ana several times on the blues cruise. She was totally awesome!!!! Got to meet her and got her autograph. Ana you and your band are great song

  13. Let’s take “The Essential Popa Chubby” cover, also displayed currently on this page.

If he had used Popovic’s approach, we’d really have something to be offended about.

So I look back and forth between the two covers just as they are– eenie meenie minie mo, Popa Chubby’s gotta go!

    I’m just sayin’!

  14. An album cover is for the eyes. The music inside is for the soul.

Just like Ana herself, “UNCONDITIONAL” delivers an AMAZING dose of blues-driven soul and comes packaged with a VERY appealing visual.

This is Ana’s FINEST work to date … burning hot blues-rock with elements of jazz, gospel, and funk. Her BOTTLENECK is SMOKIN’ and her SINGIN’ is RINGIN’ ….

    AWESOME !!!

  15. William says:

Maybe that cover was just to get people talking, either way does it “HAVE” to have a meaning? She is a very talented musician who happens to be very sexy and beautiful, just enjoy it!

  16. frank malia says:

Get over the cover already. She’s hot, plays great slide and has incredible blues technique along with a great voice! Or would you rather see a nude dude?!

  17. Cap'n Barney says:

“Unconditional” was #1 on the WMHB Top 40 Blues Chart for AUG 2011. Her singing is awesome but the guitar work is second to none. I’ve seen her live – it was a small club and we were 15 feet away from her, from her guitar and from the speakers. What a show! And during the break, she chatted with everyone who came up to her for a photo or just a few words of admiration. Nice person in addition to a great performer. The cover of the album? Classy and smokin.’ Cheesy it ain’t. Chip, get your eyes checked!

  18. Peter Sundell says:

    I´ll buy the CD!

  19. Diana says:

    Sex sells…

  20. Anna says:

I agree with comments. What’s the problem with the cover??? I love it. Finally someone brought some sex into the blues.. and not afraid to show it! Rock on girl!

  21. Larin says:

It is the most beautiful blues CD in this century in my opinion. She is great and yet so sexy.

  22. Larin says:

It is the most beautiful blues CD in this century in my opinion. She is great and so sexy yet.

  23. Larin says:

    And cover?
What do you Americans want tell a lot of lies? Your country is the biggest producer of porn. And this cover of innocence will lead you to cast? What a hypocrisy!
Just think of Jimi Hendrix and the cover plate of Electric Ladyland. America was outraged.
Each CD is something like the story that says something as the music, lyrics and of course the cover.
And among other things. It is better to look at beautiful women than the thick and sweaty guys.
