Where did you grow up?
I am from Aiken S.C..
Point of fact, one of the key changes in R&B came as a result of te small combos that sprung up in our part of the country following WWII.
Jesse Stone and the N.Y. crowd began making field trips back home. The small combos were emphasizing what became known as the "Back" beat. This is the sound of such records as "Shake, Rattle, and Roll." This is what morphed into Rock "N" Roll. Of course it hits a note with you, we grew up with it.

Your column get better every time. Could it have something to do with my growing up in the Carolina's in the 50's and the fact that you hit on so many familiar themes? Probably.

Keep it up.
