When Ahmet & Jerry would go to New Orleans to record Slim they used Slim’s band but added Red Tyler & Edgar Blanchard to fill out the sound. They did not want to sound like the Cosmos house band. I think that is why those sides are overlooked by fans of New Orleans blues and R&B.

I’ve had that Guitar Slim CD on Specialty for years but it was gathering dust. I felt shame about that state of affairs after reading this. I got it off the shelf and put it on the player

I would pay good money to go back in time and see Slim in his 100 ft. cord heyday. The closest I came was Albert Collins, who came out of a club in Ottawa, Canada..paused on the sidewalk and flashed a smile at me whilst I was imbibing a beer during a forlorn winter. He went up the stairs of the adjacent poolroom with a 3 piece horn section following him. I am smitten with the blues at that moment. IF I hadn’t been, I think I may as well have been sleeping in the ground..lol
