Point taken on the crooner, actually, I had to trim this column, and in the original draft, I mention that very fact, along with his songs that might be considered children's tunes like "Carried Water For the Elephant." What I find interesting (and sad) is the gap between his importance to music in general, and his lack of recognition. Again, Wald makes some good points about that in his book.
Great minds.. I had also sent Chip a correction on Scatman's name, apparently it was changed somewhere along the way.

I wonder if the professor knew the jovial, heavy-set Asian woman who also sang along -- out of register soprano -- to any song she liked.

Maybe they hooked up later in life!

I wonder if Carr might be the start of Urban Blues. He was from Indy-played piano, not guitar and had a voice that had a bit of the crooner in him. My favorite of his is "Prison Bound".

My favorite "How Long Blues" is by Big Joe Turner from BOSS OF THE BLUES on Atlantic.

I'd always seen Scatman's last name spelled CROTHERS and Dale McCoury's first name as Del.

Thanks for mentioning Scatman, hadn't thought about him in years. He used to make occasional appearances on the TV show "Chico and the Man", playing a garbage man. He would announce his arrival by singing, "Stick out your can, here comes the garbage man!"

Never heard Carr's version of "How Long" but will now go seek it out. Ray's version with Milt Jackson has always been my favorite, despite the somewhat tentative playing of Skeeter Best on guitar.
