Laurie Morvan Band – “Living in a Man’s World” from the album Fire It Up! which won the Blues Foundation’s best self-produced CD at the International Blues Challenge. We recently said that Laurie Morvan was “poised on the edge of a major breakthrough…sultry vocals, imaginative songwriting, and smoldering fretwork.” Our editors chose this track as truly representative of the theme of this issue, “Powerful Women Play The Blues.”

02 “Mr. Lies” By Becki Sue & Her Big Rockin’ Daddies!

Becki Sue & Her Big Rockin’ Daddies – “Mr. Lies” from the album Big Rockin’ Boogie. Hailing from the Northwest of the United States, this party quintet has been on our radar for some time. They are one of the best bands in that region and are quicklygaining a national reputation. This track will show you why.

03 Speechless By Oli Brown

Oli Brown – “Speechless” from the album Heads I Win Tails You Lose. Recently voted “Best British Male Vocalist” and “Best British Young Artist” in the British Blues Awards(his drummer, Simon Dring, won drummer of the year), Brown is quickly catching the attention around the world. “Speechless” is the single from his Ruf Records release.

04 “Little Sister (Ain’t You Suffered)” By Lisa Mann

Lisa Mann – “Little Sister (You Ain’t Suffered)” from the album Lisa Mann. Lisa Mann and Her Really Good Band are really good! They have won numerous awards in the Pacific Northwest and will represent the Cascade Blues Association at the International Blues Challenge in 2011. Also an accomplished bass player, Mann wrote this great track which the editors all agreed had to be on this sampler accompanying an issuing in tribute to women in the blues.

05 “Bad Thing” By Willie McBlind

Willie McBlind – “Bad Thing” from the album Bad Thing. Calling their music “harmonically tuned electric delta blues” this New York band is nothing but interesting. Fronted by Jon Catler on guitar and Babe Borden on vocals, their approach to the blues borders on psychedelic while remaining true to the roots in a kind of rocking Otis Taylor style. This edgy jump-blues track was produced by Jim Gaines.

06 “Living The Blues” By Blind Willy

Blind Willy – “Living The Blues” from the album Willing To Crawl. We really liked this five-song EP and it got a lot of play in our offices. Combining elements of blues, soul, and rock, with a little swampiness thrown in for good measure, Doug Jones pulled in some impressive Nashville players to put together a soulful track.

07 “Georgia Redsnake” By Nick Moss

Nick Moss – “Georgia Redsnake” from the album Priviliged. Moss is no stranger to Blues Revue, having graced our cover a couple of issues ago. Known as one of the biggest players in Chicago, we liked that this track showed Moss’ down-home side.

08 “Black Raven” By Cee Cee James

Cee Cee James – “Black Raven” from the album Low Down Where The Snakes Crawl. One of our editors said, “James may sound like Janis Joplin, but she has a sound of her own, which she delivers with grit and gut.”

09 “Shot Through The Heart” By Cliff Belcher & Friends

Cliff Belcher & Friends – “Shot Through The Heart” from the upcoming release Cliff Belcher & Friends. Best known as the bass player for Watermelon Slim & The Workers, Belcher called in Eden Brent, Jimbo Mathis, and other friends to put together this upcoming CD. You won’t hear this one anywhere else!

10 “Can’t Stop Loving You Like This” By Joanne Shaw Taylor

Joanne Shaw Taylor – “Can’t Keep Living Like This” from the album Diamonds In The Dirt. Raised in Birmingham, England, and now based in Detroit, Joanne Shaw Taylor is our cover artist for this issue. This track comes from her latest release on Ruf Records.

11 “Slow Down GTO” By Joe Louis Walker

Joe Lewis Walker – “Slow Down GTO” from the album Blues Conspiracy: Live On The Legendary Rhythm & Blues Cruise. Walker is simply one of the most awarded and recognized blues artists in the world. He was recently featured on the June/July issue of Blues Revue. Recorded live on the Blues Cruise, this track features Mike Finnigan from the Phantom Blues Band on keyboards.

12 “Two Hours From Tulsa” By R. J. Mischo

R. J. Mischo – “Two Hours From Tulsa” from the album Knowledge You Can’t Get In College. Harpman and singer Mischo leads his Red Hot Blues Band out of Arkansas. On this burning road song Mischo sings about headin’ back to his baby from the road.

13 “Confusion Boogie” By Mark Evangelos

Mark Evangelos – “Confusion Boogie” from the album Guitar Mark Evangelos. Based in New York, “Guitar Mark” Evangelos has been building a reputation in the Northeast that now expands to our readers around the world.

2-  North Mississippi Allstars featuring Mavis Staples – “The Meeting” – North Mississippi Allstars teamed up with Mavis Staples on this ghost-dance gospel recording of “The Meeting,” in which one struts and swaggers confidently through the pearly gates of heaven with head held high.  The song appears on Keys to the Kingdom, the new album from North Mississippi Allstars, in stores now.

3- Bob Margolin & Dave Gross – “Low Life Blues” – Legendary guitarist Margolin teams up with rising star Gross to perform a song by the late Sean Costello. The song will be part of the upcoming release No Half Steppin’: A Tribute To The Music of Sean Costello. And that’s Dennis Gruenling on harp.

4- Jason King Band – “Mean & Nasty” – King was recently a winner of Blues Revue’s Support The Band Contest and an IBC participant. Enjoy this get-down greasy track from his self-produced CD Blue Skies & Black Shoes.

5-  Todd Sharpville – “Lousy Husband (But A Real Good Dad)” – This British bluesman, who is quickly becoming popular in the U.S., lays down a truth-filled autobiographical track from his recent release Porchlight.

6- Gina Sicilia – “Addicted” – Her first album earned her a Blues Music Award nomination for “Best New Artist Debut,” her second earned her accolades and recognition. This smoky song is from her upcoming third album, Can’t Control Myself.

7- Dr. Wu & Friends featuring Buddy Whittington – “Why Is It So Hard To Say Goodbye?” – This eclectic Texas ensemble never takes themselves too seriously and lays down some great Lone Star blues. This track is from Texas Blues Project Volume II.

8- Fabrizio Poggi & Chicken Mambo – “I’m On My Way” – This Italian band’s star-studded 2010 release Spirit & Freedom was a favorite of the Blues Revue staff. With this, the opening track, you will see why. A little help from The Blind Boys of Alabama and Charlie Musselwhite doesn’t hurt either!
