Legacy Recordings, the catalog division of Sony Music Entertainment, wishes the extraordinary blues innovator Taj Mahal a Happy 70th Birthday.

The label will celebrate the groundbreaking artist with a major catalog reissue project beginning with the release of the newly-curated The Hidden Treasures of Taj Mahal 1969-1973, an extraordinary two-disc collection of previously unreleased studio and live performances, available Tuesday August 21.

A two-disc sonic portrait chronicling the early stirrings of Taj Mahal’s solo career, The Hidden Treasures of Taj Mahal 1969-1973 features two CDs comprised entirely of unreleased finished material. The first disc debuts studio recordings from 1967-1973, while the second disc premieres a full-length live concert, recorded April 18, 1970 at the Royal Albert Hall in London (on a bill that included Santana).

The Hidden Treasures of Taj Mahal 1969-1973 is the first release in an ongoing catalog project which includes plans to release definitive editions of the artist’s entire Columbia Records catalog.

“Throughout my more than 40 years of recording, I have always been an outside-the-box composer/musician/performer and not always understood by the music industry, so it gives me a phenomenal amount of personal pleasure to have Sony/Legacy reissue my whole catalog of music! This is fabulous news for the legions of fans who have always been unfailingly loyal to me and this music we’ve shared for the duration of a wonderful and (thank you very much) still on-going career of touring and playing live for fans around the world!,” said Taj Mahal. “This excitement is amplified even more for everyone (me included) by the first-time release of an excellent live concert from Royal Albert Hall in London, England and an an album of never before released studio musical gems! I’m thrilled that this music is finally coming to the light of day! So go for it babies! Listen and dance your (bleep) off to the music we love so much and glad there’s more where that came from! I made the music of my heart and y’all helped!!”

Born Henry St. Clair Fredericks, Jr. in Harlem, New York, on May 17, 1942, Taj Mahal has created an inimitable and enduring body of work, a bedrock blues flavored with strains of West Indian, Caribbean and African music with elements of jazz, rock and reggae flowing effortlessly through the mix. A two-time Grammy winner, Taj Mahal opened the untapped potential of the Delta Blues, felt the connection to African soul and island rhythms, and became one of world music’s first proponents and champions.

The Bradenton Blues Festival

Save The Date – Saturday – December 1, 2012

For tickets and general information click here!

The inaugural Bradenton Blues Festival, slated for December 1, 2012 from 10 a.m.-8 p.m., at the re-designed Riverwalk. Nestled along the Manatee River in downtown Bradenton, will feature some of the top blues acts in the country, says Johnette Isham, executive director of Realize Bradenton, the festival’s organizer. “Our artistic director, Paul Benjamin, has assembled a world-class lineup of artists of national and regional acclaim,” she says. “This is going to be one heck of a hot inaugural festival. We expect to attract blues enthusiasts from around the region and country.”

Benjamin, who founded and still produces the North Atlantic Blues Festival in Rockland, Maine, says that he was thrilled with the response he received from the artists. “This festival will play host to some America’s finest blues artists. Ruthie Foster, Kenny Neal, Dave ‘Biscuit’ Miller, Southern Hospitality, Johnny Sansone, Homemade Jamz, the Steve Arvey Horn Band with Henry Lawrence, and Ben Prestage have all come on board,” says Benjamin. “With acts like this, we’re expecting a ticket sell-out well in advance of the festival.”

Isham adds that festival organizers are offering a special offer for people who purchase tickets before June 1, 2012. “The general admission will be $30 at the door,” says Isham. “But if people buy advance tickets on our website before June 1, they’ll get them for $25. As an added bonus, we’ll include three issues of Blues Revue magazine and a Blues Music CD sampler (a $17.50 value).”

“Dozens of businesses, organizations and individuals are supporting this event, to help rock our region with a world-class festival and show the world that the city of Bradenton and Manatee County is great place to live, work, play, and visit!” says Isham. “The response from event sponsors has been overwhelming. We’re delighted to announce that the festival’s Presenting Sponsor is M&I, a part Of BMO Financial Group.”

Kerry Ward, vice president of M&I, expressed why M&I is taking a leadership role as the Presenting Sponsor of the inaugural festival. “We feel this is a great opportunity to be part of the momentum building in the downtown area and to partner with Realize Bradenton as they continue to create great destinations and events in our community,” he said. “This event has the potential to become world-class and we hope the business community will join us in helping to make that happen.”

Isham says that event sponsors will experience the blues in VIP style designed by Lisa Arrigo of LA Events Inc., including exclusive use of the VIP Pavilion, a full bar, and gourmet culinary stations prepared by Pier 22. Best of all, VIP guest have access to private bathrooms decorated in blues style.

International Blues Challenge

Showcase

The New Daisy Theater

Memphis, Tennesee

By Charley Burch

Each year The Blues Foundation’s International Blues Challenge (IBC) opens with a special showcase featuring the international (non-American) participants in the IBC. Hosted by The Beale Street Merchants Association and the hospitality of MSCMC Chairman and Daisy wwner Mike Glenn, the 2012 FedEx IBC Showcase got underway around 5 p.m. on Tuesday, January 31, on Beale Street in Memphis. The Blues Foundation’s Joe Whitmer laid down the rules and guidelines for the show to the 16 acts, which flowed smoothly and with stopwatch precision. Profound Sound and the production crew delivered impeccable sonic production throughout the evening for the talent that proved to consist of no weak links. FedEx was represented by Joey Sichting and The Blues Foundation’s Jay Sieleman acted as emcee. This was one of the better music conference showcases and events that I can recall for the IBCs and this concert hall.

At 5:30 pm, the show kicked off with Bleu Rascals (Philippines), a three- piece teen band that played Stevie Ray Vaughan and Chuck Berry covers with laser precision. At 5:50 p.m., the rootsy duo Damir Branilovicch Acoustic Balls (Croatia) switched gears and genres with their original songs followed by an incredibly tight and strong signature performance by the John F. Klaver Band (Netherlands). The Dutch offer a new Blues Award that was introduced in recent years and Klavner’s act was joined by another Dutch duo act, The Mudbirds (Netherlands). Slippin’ and sliding in at 6:50 p.m. from Down Under was The Mojo Webb Band (Australia), who where suited and tied for their very enthusiastic and entertaining three-song set list. Breezy Brian Gregg (Canada) entered the stage in a sequined jacket with a folkabilly singer-songwriter set.

Pristine from Norway

The next two acts proved to be the most original and authentic sets of the evening. A whirling B3 intro introduced the dynamic vocals and incredible stage presence of lead singer Heidi and her band Pristine (Norway), whose rocking blues caused the photographers to act like paparazzi for the first time in the evening. Their overall stellar performance commanded constant call and responses from the audience such as “Yeah!” and “Hell, Yeah!” The Big Daddy Wilson Duo (Germany) calmed the stage down for a moment, only to wow the audience with soulful vocals and a real-deal Delta Blues execution of songs with merely a guitarist and Wilson’s light percussion rig. A fantastic storyteller and originally from North Carolina, Wilson told me that he found his soul and the blues in Germany where he has resided for the past quarter of a century.

Big Daddy Wilson Duo from Germany

Being only at the halfway mark of the event, which at 8:10 is operating with military precision and efficiency, Marco Marchi & Mojo Workers Blues (Switzerland) wailed away with guttural vocals accompanied by harp, guitar, bass, and one heck of a big old tuba. The singer of BSBE (Italy) could barely get over the powerhouse sound of his distorted guitar and frenzied drummer who together fused the influences of Zeppelin and The White Stripes. The soft and soulfully talented voice of Dawn Taylor Watson, joined by Paul Deslauriers (Canada) gave a fine duo performance at 9:10 p.m. If you have ever been to Finland or have Finnish friends, you know that they have a good time almost professionally. Micke & Lefty featuring Chef (Finland) were no exception to this rule as their lead singer kept channeling Jerry Lee Lewis gestures and intonation while playing his National-style guitar on his lap, chest, hip, and numerous other regions of his body. His band members stomped, boogied, and jammed like the world was coming to an end.

Tony and The Trailer Cats - The First Band From Africa in the IBCs

By 9:50 p.m., only three acts remained, but we were were anticipating more. Enter modern country blues trio Tony and The Trailer Cats (South Africa), which the emcee reminded us were the first ever participants in the International Blues Challenge from the African continent! (Kind of ironic with the blues’ Senegalese roots don’t you think?!). These three cats with their two acoustic and single electric guitars not only looked but sounded awesome. The swing/jump blues full-piece band Travellin’ Brothers from Spain followed next bringing back a sax and kept everyone dancing. Last, but certainly not least, at 10:30 p.m. the 24th Street Wailers (Canada) gave a fabulous outro performance with their fire red-headed lead singer/drummer, sparkling blond guitarist, and full band, also featuring a saxophone player. They closed the evening with a stomping D.Y.A.O. delivery of blues and roots music international style. With all of the Canadian participants this year, one might assume that the Canadian government will dub the IBC as a foundation for keeping their national treasures coming back to Memphis for years to come. I hope that is the case because at the end of the day, Memphis is the true birthplace of blues and rock ‘n’ roll.

Charley Burch is a Producer, Writer, and Artist Developer in Memphis.
